Doylestown Film Discussion Group

We have a great movie theater in this town,
and many of us love the art of cinema ... so let's get together!

For creative minds and great conversations!

Doylestown Library - our new location!
(with excellent parking!)
Wednesday, July 15, 6:30 to 8:30

DIRECTIONS TO OUR LIBRARY ROOM
Enter through the front door.
Maintain a thoughtful expression.
Walk straight ahead 48 paces.
(That's 96 steps for landlubbers, accountants,
and others untrained in the navigational arts.)
Turn to the right.
The door you seek is beneath the secret code words:
"Group Study Room."

OUR NEXT MEETING

Our next meeting will be on
Wednesday July 15, 6:30 TO 8:30
at the Doylestown Library
We'll meet in the Group Study Room
and look at 2 comedies separated by almost 80 years:
The Invite
A new comedy opening at the County on July 10
Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948)
Starring William Powell and Ann Blyth
Showing at the County on July 15 at 4:15, before our meeting
At first glance, these movies seem to have nothing in common.
But both begin with an ordinary relationship
that is disrupted by the unexpected.
One uses a mermaid. The other uses a dinner invitation.
Worth examining? Maybe. We'll find out together.
(No homework. No right answers. Just thoughtful conversation... and probably a few laughs.)

PLUS!

Time to become acquainted
Share your thoughts about DFG
BS Sessions - that's BrainStorm, a playful part of each meeting
where we explore creativity through fun questions

MOVIES WE'LL TALK ABOUT
(some sample questions)
TUNER
1. You might have a skill or talent that you feel is a gift.
Is a gift still a gift if it becomes a burden?
2. What responsibility comes with exceptional talent?
3. At what point does helping someone become enabling them?
4. Talk about the contrast of morality and financial pressure.
5. What other films explore what happens when ordinary people slide into extraordinary situations?
THE TRUMAN SHOW
1. What is the single most important moment in Truman's journey, and why?
2. What responsibilities do audiences have when entertainment comes at another person's expense?
3. What current technologies would make Truman's world even more believable today?
4. What other works of art ask whether reality is what we think it is?
5. Was the filmmaker expressing a valid concern, a warning, or paranoiac worry?
